An assessment of the demersal fishes of an East Coast state of Peninsular Malaysia was made using stock production models. Commercial trawl catch and effort data were used. The preliminary examination shows that the maximum equilibrium yield for Kelantan is only 1681 m.t. with an estimated optimal fishing effort of 103 trawlers, using the linear model. The necessary reduction in effort may be achieved by diverting part of the trawling fleet to offshore areas.
